Teaching comparisons- the wheel of comparing

Teaching comparisons and getting it to stick

This year was all about creative activities for the class and with this one I scored big points.
The students got their hands full with making the wheels and also they were staying in the TL doing some much needed writing.
We learn comparisons with clothing in Spanish and with vacation in French so today I'm showing your the Spanish example, which is basically a blank example.

After constructing the wheel, the students have to fill it in with vocabulary from the lesson.

As homework you could give them a task to write a list of adjectives and clothing linked to the topics.
So the wheel is constructed with three parts:
-the smaller wheel does not get filled in it has the comparing symbols (+-=)
-the medium wheel is the adjectives in the masculine form better again if they put the irregular ones! ( the students have to write the adjectives on the outside)

-the big wheel is for the clothing and for differentiation purposes they can put the demonstratives or article or not (again the student write on the outside)

The great thing to teach comparisons is you can do it with a lot of topics and I try to get the kids to understand that it is not because we learn to use them with clothing that they should stop there so they also write examples with food and transports for example.
I also use a table with an example at the top and they have to spin their wheel as often as needed to get various examples of comparisons to fill in the table.

The table helps dramatically those with short attention span. With additional arrows linking demonstrative and adjectives or noun and verb, students have been more consistent too.
